Jacqueline Conoir

RozeMerie Cuevas, owner/designer of JC Studios, had a pivotal moment at the age of 18. She was studying Economics when a cousin suggested she do a mini fashion event with established designers. Totally self taught she threw caution to the wind and decided to give it a try. At the fashion show the other designers arrived with rolling racks and garment bags while she had her clothing in garbage bags. Despite a terrible case of nerves there was a moment that night where she suddenly realized that this was her future.
At the time Cuevas decided to study Fashion Design Paris was the place to be. Of the 375 students who started the highly competitive program only 75 graduated. When she returned to Vancouver she found the focus almost exclusively on European designers. Together with her husband she opened a small boutique and atelier on Granville. Getting through those early years was difficult. "We struggled and struggled and ate pasta and butter for 5 years…We barely made it through every day…(working) from 7 in the morning until 12 at night…Passion, focus, determination and loving what I do is basically what kept us going." Even in the tough times Cuevas found she had great support, especially from her husband who has always believed in her talent.
Since opening in 1985, a passion for her profession and a feel for her customers has been Cuevas' trademark. JC Studio provides wardrobe consultants at no charge. "The wardrobe consultant is your connection to the studio…(They) are sensitive to everyone's needs. If you have a big budget you can let us know and we'll set you up for the whole season. If you have a small budget you let us know and we'll make sure we don't pass that…We make sure our customers don't fall into the trap of wearing clothing that doesn't suit them…All our customers are encouraged to try at least one new trend each season." Brunches held in the spring and fall include a mini-fashion show and short talk by Cuevas on upcoming trends. There are dinner invitations for clients to come and view new collections with the option to pre-book. You can phone the studio and make an appointment or just drop in at your convenience. It is no surprise JC Studio has developed a strong, loyal clientele.
The Jacqueline Conoir Spring 2008 line is large and diverse, offering options for many ages and occasions. "We have a collection that can be worn super edgy and modern or very conservatively and elegantly." In addition to basics in white, pearl, gray, black and brown, the collection is full of beautiful jewel tones, colorful bold prints and a classy metallic/rayon knit. There is a feel of old Hollywood glamour to the line - beautiful and elegant. Broad contrasts can be seen: mini and maxi lengths, narrow and wide-legged pants. Cuevas' personal favorites this season are the 50's style suits. The large variety of silhouettes assures a wide client base, but they all have one thing in common. "(Our customers) are all modern urban women whether they have careers or are stay-at-home mums. Clothing is important to them."
The Jacqueline Conoir line is sold in Vancouver exclusively through the JC Studio flagship store located at 46 W. Sixth Avenue in Vancouver. For more information you can visit their website at www.jcstudio.ca
