Let there be fashion
– Fiat Mode XXI

By Alicia-Rae Light

Vancouver Community College held their 21st annual graduate fashion show on July 31, Presented by the Fashion Arts certificate and diploma graduates as a tribute to their accomplishments, which were of the highest technical standards. That evening, two years worth of cutting edge designs and freshly developed talent were showcased at Vancouver's premier fashion event venue, The Rocky Mountaineer Station, decorated in a theme of warm pinks and cool purples. Sponsored by Mavi Jeans, Metro and Nuvo magazine, the evening featured both this years graduating students as well as established alumni, with live reggae music and a delightful array of hors d'oeuvres both provided by students from VCC's other programs.

VCC's Fashion Arts program started in 1986 to provide training and upgrading for those who were waiting to enter into the fashion industry. As whole, the program strives for the students to be themselves and to veer off into their own direction and ultimately leading them to follow their own unique passions and to develop individual creativity.

Graduate Tha Danh's collection featured feminine and romantic garments, complete with an abundance of layers, eccentric patterns and created with luxurious fabrics such as silk, yet remained able to be worn as everyday wear, or double as classy evening wear.

As the recipient of award from renowned designer Gabriel Levi as well as the Sarah Hudson Fashion award of 2008, Christine Hambleton was considered to be this year's top student in terms of design, passion, construction and commitment. Her collection featured hand pleated satin, intricate surface details and fine fabrics including wool, polished cotton as well as silk, using a rich color palette of deep browns, aubergine and subtle grays.

Alison Riley, student with the highest GPA as well as one who produced an exceptional display of passion, structure and fabrication was also recipient of the Gabriel Levi award. Fairy tails and all their enchantment is what inspired her collection. With hand painted silk designs, cutouts and careful attention to intricate detailing, this collection was by far the most unique and enchanting collection of the evening.

All the students together put on a truly spectacular evening. In the words of Coco Chanel, "Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening." That evening, VCC's graduates proved just that is the essence of the industry.

Haute Heroes
By Miranda Sam

On August 7th, the latest crop of fashion students at John Casablancas put on one haute show at The Modern (Gastown, Vancouver). The show hosted by renowned Vancouver designer, Jason Matlo. Paying tribute to the annual New York Metropolitan Ball, Haute Heroes featured a red carpet runway. Not only did the models change costumes in terms of clothing, so did they with accessorizing pieces: from punchy coloured eyeshadow + long lashes, they moved to sunglasses, then librarian glasses. Vancouver's Project Runway Canada season one contestant, Carlie Wong, featured a much more wearable collection than what we usually see from her couture upbringing. Joanna Kulpa never fails to win us over with innovative yet not so in-your-face sustainable fashion (you honestly don't notice it). Were we thirsty for more at the end of the show? To say the least, the room was haute.
