Strut: A Fabulous Evening of Spring Fashion for a Cause
By Vanessa Lewis

Coquitlam Centre presented their 2nd annual fashion show extravaganza at the Red Robinson Show Theatre in support of Variety - the Children's Charity and Eagle Ridge Hospital Foundation. It was definitely an event to be remembered!

Upon arrival, guests were given a paparazzi treatment emceed by Virgin Radio's morning duo, Nat & Drew. After the photos were taken, guests mingled during cocktail hour and checked out the various "backstage" pamper stations that showcased Coquitlam Centre retailers such as the Body Shop. Various celebrity impersonators such as Paris Hilton, Tina Turner and Ugly Betty took pictures and entertained everyone as they enjoyed their custom cocktail and appetizers. Before the fashion show, guests were able to participate in the silent auction and indulge in chocolate and gelato.

Then guests were ushered to their seats by local firefighters. The live auction, emceed by Nat & Drew, featured great prizes such as a Maserati for the weekend and a private wine tasting for 10. The fashion show featured fashions from Coquitlam Centre retailers and was produced by local stylist & fashion show producer, Tracey Pincott and emceed by Global TV's Randene Neill. Concluding the event was a knock out performance by Tina Turner who belted out some of her hits. This is definitely an event not to be missed next year!

Show Off
by Marilyn Wilson

April 17th saw the the debut of Imogene Productions' premiere fashion event - Show Off. MC'd by Johnn Staub from the BEAT 94.5 FM, it was an upbeat evening of food, drink, fashion, music and dance which catered to a young urban crowd. Although the start was delayed, DJ's Richie McFly and Hustle kept the music flowing until the show began with a high-energy performance of Electro Rock by The Tito Deville Band.

Following was a 2-part fashion show presenting lines from 10 local designers/stores - Boys'Co, DIPT, Freshmans, Goodfoot, Stussy, Paris Angel, Merder Tees, F as in Frank, Mental Wealth and Ultra. The focus was street wear, high end denim, urban and contemporary fashions. Most garments were casual and in an unusual twist there was a larger selection of men's wear. In the intermission everyone was amazed with the performance by a group of local Hip Hop - sorry no luck finding out their name. "The best is always saved for last" was never truer than with the fashion show. Closing the evening was the debut launch of the Fall/Winter 2009 collection by Christopher Bates for Ultra. This high-end mens wear designed with a strong European influence is due to be the next big must-have label. Partial proceeds from this event went to benefit Family Services of Greater Vancouver.

Congrats to this new company on a successful first event. Be sure to keep an eye on their website at www.imogenpro.com for other upcoming events.

Absolute Style 2009
by Marilyn Wilson

Absolute Style 2009 featured the collections of 18 Fashion Design students graduating from the University of the Fraser Valley's 2-year diploma program. The one thing I love about attending this show is that it also presents a broad overview of the program.

The show begins every year with examples of the best work in many areas of study and includes work from students other than graduates. Designs for the speciality market included swimsuits, jackets, coats and bustiers. While all of these pieces were excellent, the swimsuits surprised me. Lycra swimsuits just aren't normally a part of most grad shows, and these suits were all unusual and fit beautifully. Several of the coats also stood out and there were a couple unique ones I would love to own. Next was a section titled "Art To Wear" which featured garments sewn from materials that had been created by weaving, machine knitting, surface design (dyeing, over dye, screen printing, image overlay, shibori pleating, devore burn-out) or draping.

The grad collections this year were a great mix. The designers each found a very personal artistic statement and did an excellent job of pulling the look together to support it. The move to 3 looks this year also let one get a better feel for the collection as a whole. The hardest part of these review is always which ones to mention. Jennifer McManaman's medical scrubs were a brand new take and it worked. The hip collection in silver and black by Nancy Chi was strong. Sarah Davis and Gina Hopkins produced burlesque-fantasy-goth creations that were show-stoppers. An unusual draped bridal and flower girl dress inspired by Arabian Africa and designed by Kidde Itto also caught my attention. The biggest smiles always come with the kid's collections. Christa Dunlop's urban layered look and Jeanine Vidal's more polished designs, both for young girls, were no exception. Award winners were: Gina Hopkins for Most Creative, Sarah Davis for Technical Proficiency, Justine Schoeber for Illustration, Emily McIntyre for Textile and Courtney Stewart for Most Marketable.
