Creativity at the Tip of a Blush Brush
by Casey Strynadka
Ever since she was a young girl, Negar Hooshmand has loved makeup. When still in grade school, she would pack up all her supplies, sneak them out of the house and apply them at school. She also grew up helping her friends do their makeup for school events. Not ever thinking that makeup artistry was a career option, Hooshmand went to university to study sociology. Even though she could never see herself at a nine to five job, she continued on this path until a friend enrolled in the Blanche Macdonald makeup artistry program. Wanting to follow her dreams and passion, Hooshmand also enrolled.
The course work at Blanche Macdonald took one full year to complete. They prepared Hooshmand by teaching her the ways of the brush and that persistence was key to surviving in this industry. Once graduated, she began to break and bend the rules she had learnt to fit her own creative style. Building on the skills from the Blanche program, she was able to push the envelope in makeup artistry. "I like to challenge myself in terms of my makeup style and sometimes use magazine photos that appear challenging as inspirations to try something new. [When creating a look] I like to bring beauty out in the looks I achieve even if it is inspired by darkness or sadness." To build her reputation in the industry she is also continuously working on updating her portfolio every chance she can.
Currently Hooshmand is working on her bridal and editorial artistry. Bridal makeup is fun and she adores doing it. "The brides are so grateful and it's just fun to be there for them on their special day." To respond to the growth in her bridal makeup company and to be able to help more brides on their special day, Hooshmand has started to add other makeup artists to her website. Referring them to clients is something she enjoys doing and hopes that, like her, it will bring them great success. Along with other opportunities she receives, Hooshmand feels that she gets the best of both worlds within the makeup industry, but her true passion lies in the creativity offered by editorial photo shoots.
Although she has only been in the business of makeup artistry for two years, Hooshmand already has a few great successes under her belt. Recently she was featured in New York's Ouch! Magazine. Also she has done work for a few local celebrities including Christine Simpson of the NHL network. Another big claim to fame would be doing the makeup for the cover of Jahfus's latest album. A great help in building her portfolio was local photographer Matthew Burditt who she's worked with on many shoots. She also goes on to say, "how lucky and thankful I feel to have met and to have been surrounded by so many inspiring, creative and amazing individuals who have helped me on this road " All the hard work paid off when she was recently signed to be represented by the Werkmodellen agency.
Hooshmand hopes to make this a career that will last a life time and always strives to be the best she can be. "To be able to do exactly what you love and live off it is an amazing feeling!" Her future goals include adding to her bridal portfolio, editorial portfolio and breaking into the Toronto market in the near future. Vancouver will continue to be her home base for work because she loves the city and the people who have helped her along the way.
