September events covered by Alicia-Rae Light: Fiat Mode XXII - Let There Be Fashion - VCC Graduation Show On Sept. 30 2009 at Vancouver's Rocky Mountaineer Station, there was most definitely fashion and it was pouring across more than one runway in Vancouver that evening. Amidst a spring 2010 fashion-packed week of B.C. Fashion Week, a breath of fresh talent was showcased as 20 of Vancouver Community College's Fashion Arts certificate and diploma graduates presented their personal collections. The evening was filled with many well constructed, exciting and striking contemporary woman's collections from 19 female designers and one male designer who combined creativity with construction skills to create their own masterpieces. Aleksandra Potkoujak's tribute line to Charlie Chaplin's cheer was a highlight of the evening as a hot pink bubble bottomed crinoline dress, contrasted with a bright pink yellow sweetheart neck top with Chaplin hat print. Also in her line were a pair of strikingly bright hot pink skinny jeans and a cobalt blue high-waisted sweat fleece skirt with large front pockets and a single large yellow button, paired again with a variety of the yellow Chaplin hat printed button up top, with bold red buttons and 3/4 length sleeves. Tara Wilson's Genre Collection, inspired by different genres of music relating back to her company DCM Entertainment, mixed fall colours with lots of greys, burgundy and browns. Leather leggings paired with a stunning grey and silver antique pattern printed button up blouse and a black leather corset with frill detail, was the highlight of her collection. Lisa Gellar of the Fashion Arts program presented the achievement award to Brianna Vogelaar, for having notably exceptional talent in all areas of the program including design, pattern construction and business. Her line, inspired by Santa Fe and the Mexican desert, included a striking sleeveless white dress with turquoise fringing. Mandy Lao, who's line included intricate detail, draping and design, received both the Hudson Fashion Award, given to the student with the highest academic grades, as well as the renowned Canadian designer Gabriel Levi award, given to the top student in the program who showed passion, commitment, potential and success and was given a prize of $1000. Katherine Koniecki also received a $1000 scholarship, with her line featuring lots of leather, sequins and hardware accents. Also, our very first print issue of Vancouver Fashion eZine was first seen at Fiat Mode XXII, featuring a number of VCC graduates illustrations and clothing, with $6 from each magazine going towards the Fashion Arts program. Generous media gift bags boxes filled with goodies from sponsors Viva spa, Mavi, Montecristo and in the spirit of Italy, Peroni beer was served. Congrats to the VCC grads of 2009 for putting on once again, the most fabulous, well produced show of the fashion season. by Lisa Wong: Wear Else kicked off a busy September fashion season with their Fall Preview Event at Park Royale on Tuesday September 1st. The event was well-attended by fashion industry insiders, media, and Wear Else clients alike. The star of the evening was FLARE magazine's editor-in-chief Lisa Tant, who gave a presentation on the top runway trends for fall/winter 2009. Trends that Tant cited included strong Balmain-esque shoulders, neon colours, anything red, statement necklaces, denim leggings, bold shoes, and over-the-knee boots. A fashion show featuring models from JK models and clothes and accessories from Wear Else followed. Expect to see quality fall classics from Wear Else that will transition from this season to next year: ladylike jackets, coats, and sheath dresses; slouchy handbags; and gorgeous boots. GUESS by Marciano (Metropolis at Metrotown), with the participation of TheStyleSpy.com hosted a lovely fall cocktail reception on Wednesday September 9th in celebration of its new fall line. Guests enjoyed delicious appetizers by Culinary Capers and raspberry-garnished cocktails as they shopped. Partial proceeds from the evening went to Dress for Success, while a $5 donation to the organization netted shoppers a 20% discount on their purchases for one night only. Design director Alejandro Blanco was present and in good spirits as he greeted guests and offered shopping advice to customers. Sarah Blondin, host of The Style Spy's Novus TV segments, was also in attendance and circulating through the crowd in search of interviews. Two of Hearts Boutique owners and designers Jenny Yen and Tabitha Savoie declared their devotion to Vancouver fashion with the "I Love Local" fall fashion show and party on Saturday September 12th. The show itself featured new fall/winter clothing from Togs, CiCi, and Two of Hearts styled alongside accessories from other local designers. This season's clothes combine ladylike polish with the sporty, playful aesthetic that Two of Hearts is known for. Interesting details like tie-necks, cowl necklines, belted waists, screened graphics, and coloured fabric insets appeared on dresses, tops, and skirts. Keep an eye out for Two of Hearts's new online store coming soon this fall. While New York and London turned into all-out circuses on Fashion's Night Out (Thursday September 10th), here in Vancouver, The Bay was the only participating retailer. The downtown flagship store kept its doors open until 10pm to let customers shop. Nira Arora from the BEAT 94.5 FM was present to emcee the event. High points included a fall trends presentation and fashion show hosted by stylist Luisa Rino, an accessories trend report, a beauty gala on the main floor, and a glimpse of the to-die-for renovated shoe department. Jacqueline Conoir presented their spring/summer 2010 collection on Monday September 28th at Fortune Night Club during BC Fashion Week. Vancouver's most fashionable and JC Studio clientele mingled at what proved to be an extremely well-attended event, sipping on drinks and chatting. Next season's collection features draped white jersey tops screened with Edie Sedgwick's face, immaculate suiting, silk chiffon gowns in earthy tones with bright jolts of colour, and flowing cream-coloured gowns sure to be perfect for beach weddings. Stacy McKenzie, runway coach and Canada's Next Top Model regular, was present and watching the show in the front row. Designer RozeMerie Cuevas came out on the runway at the end of her show, perfectly embodying the Jacqueline Conoir woman in one of her own Edie Sedgwick screened tops. From the Big Apple to the City of Glass, Malene Grotrian returned to Vancouver fresh off of her New York Fashion Week triumph with a show at BC Fashion Week. On Wednesday September 30th, media and fashion enthusiasts gathered at Circa Resto Lounge. Models sashayed along a path marked out on the lower level to the sound of electronic music and live violinist Rosemary Siemens. For the spring/summer 2010 collection, Grotrian drew inspiration from sand--the way it looked and moved in all of its incarnations, the colours and tones at the beach. Pieces shown included high-waisted pencil skirts, structured shirtdresses, evening jackets, flowing trousers, bustiers, and cocktail skirts--all done in luxurious fabrics sourced from Italy and Montreal. The finale look--a black-and-white strapless embroidered gown with a flowing train--earned a round of applause from the audience. Grotrian herself came out at the end of the show and graciously greeted guests and well-wishers. by Serena Mason: Changes' Birthday Fashion Show Once again, the fabulous team at Changes Clothing and Jewelry Bar on W.10th Avenue wowed the rapt crowd with a creatively styled fashion show comprised of high-end consigned women's wear. The show was upbeat and inspirational, showcasing the versatility of great pieces for great prices. Modelling the looks were some of Changes' most fabulous clients - wonderful ladies of all ages and shapes, who sashayed, shimmied and danced down the runway. Such a fun evening! Brooks Brothers S/S 2010 The Brooks Brothers S/S 2010 presentation began with a nod to Mad Men-era music, as the sultry tones of a Sinatra-esque crooner blasted over the sound system. The show continued on in that vein as the eleven looks made their way down the runway. Layering was the word of the day, with blazers layered over grandpa cardigans layered over crisp button-downs. The suiting was exquisite and straightforward and the casual looks had traces of the straight-laced, side-parted nerd of the early 1960s. This season, the Brooks Brothers man is inspired by the fashion of yesteryear but is, as always, cool. Just cool. by Alicia-Rae Light: BCFW Wednesday/Thursday On Wednesday evening at Circa Lounge, last year's generation next winner Margarita Angelatos showcased her eco-friendly line, Red Jade. With an immense improvement and maturing from last season, her line wowed the crowd at BCFW as the models walked her very West Coast fashion through the lounge. Some noteworthy pieces include organic cotton capris in very earthy tones, some very simple silk thin strapped flowy dresses, and a gorgeous marigold yellow blouse with slight ruffle detail at the short turtle neck and 3/4 length sleeves. A couple off the shoulder pieces also complimented her line very well, as well as some simple black and gold pattern printed dresses. Everything was very well constructed and ready-to-wear. Thursday's shows took place at the Chinese Cultural Center. Crossover featured an eclectic mix of styles that didn't necessarily come together as a line but included many well-made garments. Some designs included colourful and bright safari print, Bollywood, sheer and shiny club wear including corsettes, some men's blazers and Indian saris with great decal detail BCFW Photo Stream by Peter Jensen
