OCTOBER EVENTS COVERED

Obakki Spring Preview Event
by Lisa Wong
Photography by Peter Jensen

Fall is just starting to settle in, but at Obakki on the evening of Thursday October 29 all eyes were focused on spring. The Gastown shop was packed with guests mingling, sipping on drinks, and browsing the fall/winter collection before the show began. The show itself was an intimate but well-organized affair. Rows of white chairs with black goodie bags on them lined the runway for the lucky handful of VIP guests; for everyone else it was standing room only. Obakki's spring/summer 2010 collection is bound to please the fans of its "minimalist, classic with a contemporary edge" aesthetic. Standout pieces included a boyfriend blazer with patterned rolled cuffs, high-waisted dress shorts with front pleats, and one-shoulder cocktail dresses with flattering ruching down the front and sides. The show was greeted with applause from the audience, most of whom stayed and continued to celebrate as the evening progressed.

Art Institute Grad Show

This stunning show titled Global Gallery featured the collections of 45 graduates from the Art Institute's fashion design program. The production by Vladimir Markovich combined stunning graphic projections (including a tribal pattern on the runway with stage smoke driftly over it) and strong music selections. Separated into 5 designer groupings, the interludes were filled by talented dancers from the Arts Umbrella whose first tribal themed number truly brought the house down. Collections covered a wide range: lingerie, party, casual, bridal, couture, theatre and business. It is very hard to pick a few designers to mention when so many talented students were showcased. Nicole Lorden's peacock dress, Kamila Gougain Poblette's retro stewardess look, Jana Sophia's cream coloured couture gown and Emily Molenda's party dress collection are but a small sampling from the many worthy of mention. Award winners, selected by an elite judging panel that included Jaqueline Kirby, RozeMerie Cuevas and Sarah Murray, are as follows: Yvonne Xie - most outstanding designer collection, Kimberley Der - most excellently executed collection and Renuca Kumar - most marketable collection. Please check the AI website for information regarding Fashion Design student, Ingrid Bergstrom-Kendrick, grand prize winner of the Humane Society of the United States' fifth annual Cool vs. Cruel Fashion Design Competition in New York City.

Wanny Tang held a launch for her Spring 2010 at Salari. A minimalist at heart - she managed to incorporate prints, gold-toned garments and shoes into the mix and still stay true to her roots. The collection was divided into 4 sections and Tang built an intricate story line into each. First was the Royale collection where the royalty came to see what was happening in an unstable world. Next were the Flow and the Fusion collections where they saw the people were lost and unsure. The Air collection was where new ideas were brought in to save the world and finally the Green collection was where new life was created. The garments followed the theme well and were elegantly simple with great proportions. One great detail I loved was the garments created from fabric with a leaf pattern paired with shoes sporting the same pattern. If you haven't checked out Wanny Tang before, now is the time.

Christopher Bates for Ultra showcased his Spring 2010 "The Romeos" collection at the Opus. With pink champagne and canapés, this packed event was abuzz with excitement. And what can be more exciting than male models walking through the crowd and posing in European influenced men's wear. Bates has a keen eye for design and always includes an amazing selection of fabrics in his collection. This season he incorporated Italian leather, metallic and waxed linen, lamb suede, Portuguese shirting and bull and waxed denim into the line. My favourite was his use of tone-on-tone embroidery to embellish several garments. There was both a Italian Nubick leather blazer and a Desperado dress shirt that sported an embroidered scorpion detail. My only regret was the press of the enthusiastic crowd as we all tried to get a closer look.

Pret-a-Pour Tea This was the 4th annual incarnation of this popular High Tea and High Fashion fund raiser benefiting the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. Produced by Tammy Preast and Sharon Chan-Knight of Ask A Woman Enterprises, the event was hosted by Tamara Taggart of CTV and had a "Mad Hatter" theme. The participants joined in enthusiastically by wearing hats that ranged from high fashion, to vintage, to homemade and the top 3 received prizes. The day was full as everyone bid on a large silent auction, nibbled on delicacies, sipped tea and bubbly, purchased "Roas Boas" and watched a tea-room style fashion show that featured Lela Designs, Wear Else, Blush Occasions and Obakki. If you haven't had a chance to attend this sell-out event, look to purchase your ticket early next year as it's one not to be missed.
